CRITICAL RECALL UPDATE
(effective from 30 November 2020)
In involved vehicles, the non-desiccated propellant that inflates the driver's or passenger's front airbag (model dependent) could absorb moisture and degrade. This is either due to deficiencies during the manufacturing process (alpha), or after prolonged exposure to high humidity and fluctuating high temperatures (beta).
It is important to note, moisture intrusion in affected inflator propellant is a result of exposure to:
This means the environment (operating location of the vehicle) is a factor, as is the age of a vehicle when assessing the risk of the condition occurring.
If the inflator propellant degrades and the vehicle is involved in a collision, the airbag can go off with too much explosive force, causing sharp metal fragments to shoot out and kill or seriously injure people in the vehicle.
Owners of vehicles under 'critical' recall need to take immediate steps to have the airbag inflators replaced because there is a heightened safety risk of injury or death and it is critical that replacement occurs immediately.
The Recall Notice allows vehicle manufacturers to designate vehicles as critical if there is evidence or information about safety risks which makes recalls of these vehicles urgent. Toyota has reclassified all outstanding vehicles under the Takata Airbag Recall Campaign as critical.
Owners of vehicles under critical recall must stop driving their vehicles immediately. Toyota will offer to arrange for your vehicle to be towed to the place of replacement or for a qualified technician to travel to you (or some similar arrangement) so that you do not have to drive your vehicle if you do not wish to do so.
Due to the location of the faulty Takata airbag inflators in these vehicles (front driver airbag behind the horn pad of the steering wheel) and the inflator being older than 6 years, these airbag inflators pose a heightened safety risk of injury or death. At this more advanced stage of the Takata recalls, these vehicles are now being prioritised and treated as critical.
No. There are no warnings or other indicators that this condition exists.
Please refer to the table here for vehicles fitted with Takata airbag inflators (alpha or beta) subject to active recall. You can also check the status of a Toyota vehicle on Toyota’s VIN checker here.
The ACCC monitors progress of the compulsory Takata airbag recall and publishes progress data on the Product Safety Australia website.
No. All affected Toyota vehicles are now under active recall.
You can check the status of your specific Toyota vehicle by searching for your vehicle and VIN number here.
Toyota contacts all customers directly at the time of active recall initiation, so it is important your contact details are up to date. While Toyota seeks to contact affected vehicle owners directly, we may be unable to do so if accurate contact details are not available. Please update your contact details here or by contacting the Campaign Helpline on 1800 987 366 (8am to 6pm, Mon-Fri AET).
Your vehicle might be listed for a Takata recall even if it has already been subject to a Takata recall - if so, you can find more information here.
The inflator is a device contained within the airbag assembly. It contains a solid propellant which is ignited in the event airbag deployment is necessary. When ignited, the solid propellant expands into an inert gas, inflating the airbag.
Toyota urges owners to immediately stop driving the vehicle and call a Toyota Dealer to organise towing (free of charge) to have the airbag inflator replaced. Alternatively, subject to a suitable work location, an on-site repair may be completed by a Toyota technician.
Toyota Dealers will arrange any required towing of vehicles under ‘critical recall’ and all rectification will be performed free of charge to minimise inconvenience to the vehicle owner.
Desiccants collect moisture present in their immediate environment, helping to limit moisture absorption of other nearby materials, such as propellant in an airbag inflator.
Desiccants are commonly placed inside the packaging of new goods to collect moisture. For example: pharmaceuticals, shoes and handbags.
No. Affected Takata inflators contain non-desiccated propellant that results in the condition occurring. Please read the 'What is the condition?' FAQ at the top of this list to learn more.
If the non-desiccated propellant degrades, the inflator can become over-pressurised and the airbag can go off with too much explosive force during deployment, causing sharp metal fragments to shoot out and kill or seriously injure people in the vehicle.
To immediately secure safety in the face of parts supply challenges globally, new Takata-produced inflators without desiccant have been used as replacement parts in addition to Takata inflators with desiccant or inflators produced by alternate suppliers.
Best evidence says that the use of Takata non-desiccated inflators as replacements removes immediate risk; however to ensure long-term safety, Takata non-desiccated inflators require replacement immediately.
This means that in some cases, to ensure long term safety, replacement airbags will need to be replaced again. Toyota understands and regrets that a further airbag replacement is an inconvenience, however this interim action has been necessary to ensure safety.

Most Takata airbag repairs take between one and two hours. However, depending upon the Dealer’s work schedule, it may be necessary to make a vehicle available for a longer period of time. All Takata airbag repairs are completed free of charge to the vehicle owner.
No. All Takata airbag replacements are completed free of charge to the vehicle owner.
Loan vehicle or special repair arrangements will be made available upon request. In addition, in all cases, a loan vehicle or alternate transportation arrangements will be made available upon request if a vehicle is required to be left at a dealership for more than 24 hours to replace the airbag.
Toyota has been notifying, and responding to, owners of affected Toyota vehicles in a number of ways (including by mail, phone, SMS and email, and has also commenced face to face visits in some areas).

Please take note that any replacement airbag installed in your vehicle following a collision or other incident may also be faulty and require replacement. It is critical that you urgently contact your closest/preferred Toyota Dealer to arrange for the airbag to be checked and replaced, if faulty.
If you own a Toyota vehicle that was not supplied by a Toyota Dealer in Australia (sometimes known as a grey or parallel import), you should contact either:
If you are unsure or need further assistance, please contact your closest / preferred Toyota Dealer.
Commercial sellers (any dealer) of second-hand vehicles are required to check all vehicles (from vehicle manufacturers’ Recall Databases and Recall Initiation Schedules) to find out if they are under recall for a faulty Takata airbag.
If commercial sellers check a second-hand vehicle and identify:
All affected Toyota vehicles are now under active recall.
