Local clubs benefiting from the Toyota Good for Footy program
It can be tough for local sports teams to thrive in today’s environment. Funding often relies on the generosity of volunteers, and it’s the passion for their sports clubs that inspired us to lend a hand. Because we also believe that sports are a common ground for people to grow. That’s why it’s important to help people get equal access and opportunity to play the sports they love with the equipment and facilities they deserve.
Fitzroy Junior FC aims to bring the joy of sport to a diverse community of young footy players. Founded in 1993, they help to manage 15 junior squads.
“Love for footy doesn't discriminate, but certainly your income does. So, to have access to funds that support us in growing the club, getting more girls and non-binary kids involved, getting more kids involved from more sections of society, it's absolutely the way that footy should be.”
– Lauren, Under 11 Girls Coach
Fitzroy Junior FC coaches know the importance of keeping their teams safe on the field, but the money for teaching has to come from somewhere.
“We're pretty big on preventing injuries, we see certain programmes that teach how to tackle, how to be tackled. Those programmes we obviously have to pay for, and we can't do that without the support and sponsorships from things like the Good for Footy program”
– Glenn, Fitzroy Junior Football Club President
Because supporting the next generation in sports means more than just kicking a ball around. It’s setting them up with the tools to take life into their own hands.
“Community sport is something that brings you together outside of school, outside of your families, where you not only find something in common, but you’re learning skills that absolutely give you a good foundation for life”
– Lauren, Under 11 Girls Coach
Due to the pandemic, over 16,000 clubs faced collapse across Australia, so it’s more important now than ever to act. In the name of grassroots, our 'Good for Footy’ and ‘Good for Cricket' programs have raised an impressive $15 million since 2008. Gear Grants helped female teams across Australia access the gear they deserve with cash grants of up to $1600, getting equipment into the hands of over 100 teams across the country. Bash for Cash famously rewarded grassroots cricket clubs for every six that was hit in an action-packed BBL showdown. 45 teams took home their share of $247,500. That’s in addition to opening an AFL stadium in Katherine, NT, to support rural for years to come.
The work isn't over. We are stoked to hear that the Good for Footy program is helping teams like Fitzroy Junior FC, but there are many more like them who still need support. So, go out there! Get amongst it, show up in the stands for your local club and support them the best you can. Seeing them work together to achieve their goals on-field and off-field? Nothing beats that feeling.
It's easy to fundraise with Toyota, and you can do it all online.
