An unforgettable camping trip is as much about the journey as it is about the destination. Especially when the road gets all four wheels working their hardest through the dirt.

What are your top three 4x4 camping destinations?

The Kimberley

Traveling through the Kimberley rewards the senses with one of the most scenic and incredibly contrasting landscapes in Australia. It’s a must on the travel list!

Cape York

Renowned as a destination for the more adventurous traveler, and for good reason. Located in far North Queensland, Cape York offers some of the most challenging 4WD tracks in the country that put the driver, vehicle and accessories to the test. It leads to some of the most picturesque destinations and camp spots that Australia has to offer.

K’gari (Fraser Island)

Mainland stresses seem to fade away as soon as the tyres touch the sand. Being able to walk out to the stunning Boorangoora (Lake Mckenzie) is just incredible. Four-wheel driving and camping on the beach, warm cuppa in hand with a golden sunrise over the ocean is something else. If you’re fortunate to experience it, you’ll understand why.

What are your most essential 4x4 accessories to take camping and why?

Tow Bar Tongue, Tow Ball, and Trailer Wiring Harness

For longer trips, you could start with these to hitch the van up – they integrate seamlessly with the chassis and electrical system.

Roof Racks and Roof Tray

Roof Racks are very handy for lighter bulky items such as swags and also allow fitting of a side awning.

Bash Plate, Front and Rear Recovery PointsJ10

The lower front Bash Plates provide underbody protection and Recovery PointsJ10 for the front and rear. They’re a fantastic addition for assisting with recovery in sticky situations, especially soft sand.

LED Light Bar

The LED Light Bar offers a great spread of additional light when driving at night, which won’t interfere with the Toyota Safety SenseS1.

Snorkel

The snorkel is great for providing cleaner air, especially for dusty travel.

Bonnet Protector, Weathershield and Rubber Floor Mats

Bonnet protectors help limit paint chips and window weather shields allow you to keep the windows down a bit in most weather conditions. The rubber floor mats make it a lot easier to clean, especially with mud or sand.

What’s the most memorable, funny and/or disastrous camping trip you’ve had with your Toyota?

I’ve had quite a few. From the stresses of being stuck in a tinnie at night at Shady Camp with a dropped tide and crocodiles all around, to crossing an old log bridge in Cape York while it cracked under the load of the LandCruiser and caravan. Then there are the pranks on the brothers. Hid a fake crocodile head in a crab pot once that nearly had one of them fall out of the boat.

Spearfishing outside Hopevale.

Most treasured of all memories would be the Gall family’s visits to Eddie and son Ivan Deemal – traditional owners outside Hopevale. They welcomed us with open arms, to share not only their own piece of paradise but also their history, traditional food-gathering knowledge and cook meals together. They even gifted us handmade woomeras and spears. With Eddie recently passing, we’re reminded of the humbling and respectful life lessons he showed us. Ivan continues to welcome travelers lucky enough to visit, and we all look forward to catching up with him someday soon.

Wherever you chose to go, we recommend Toyota Genuine Accessories to enhance the comfort and safety of your own adventures, to not only get you there but also get you home. Wishing you many safe and enjoyable travels around this beautiful country.
