Understanding Toyota drivetrains

Our Dealers often get asked to explain the difference between the Toyota drivetrains. The fact is they all have specific purposes and advantages. Here’s a quick guide to what they do.

4x4

Engaged via a manual shifter, 4x4 powers all four wheel, giving you extra grip when the turf demands it.

4WD

When engaged electronically, 4WD delivers engine power to all four wheels, with a 2WD setting for normal road use.

4x2

The standard two-wheel drivetrain on HiLux Workmate has everything you need to get the job done. Choose 4x2 HiRider for extra clearance.

AWD

All-Wheel Drive is an always-on 4-wheel drive system, which gives you more control on uneven and slippery surfaces.

G6 - Maximum vehicle braked towing capacity is subject to state and federal regulatory requirements. Before towing, customers should consider the vehicle’s limitations, including towing capacity specifications, gross vehicle mass (GVM), gross combined mass (GCM), kerb weight specified by the manufacturer, and ensure that individual front and rear axle load limits are not exceeded as also specified by the manufacturer. Vehicle payload calculation is GVM less kerb weight or as otherwise specified in the vehicle owner’s manual. Actual payload is affected by any added load to the vehicle, including the number of occupants, luggage, accessories, and tow ball download weight. It is important to consider the actual payload, to ensure the fully loaded vehicle remains within the specified GVM limits. K12 - Toyota recommends use of a Load Distribution Hitch (LDH) when towing loads greater than half of the vehicle’s GVM or as specified in the Owner’s Manual.
