On the Road with Glen Gall

The Gall Boys have spent all their lives exploring the remote beauty of Australia’s outback. In fact, travelling is in their blood, given three generations have been running their family business Kedron Caravans since 1962.

Throughout their travels, The Gall Boys have captured these adventures on film. Their documentaries have had over 18 million views on YouTube, and their website and social media pages are great sources of inspiration.

On his trip to Maytown in far north Queensland, the boys needed a car that was sturdy enough to withstand Australia’s tough terrain, and powerful enough to tow a bulky caravan. So they chose a standard HiLux SR with Toyota Genuine Accessories fitted. Glen often gets asked his thoughts on buying a car to suit a mix of 4WD, work and family holidays. And since returning from his Maytown adventure, he’s even more confident in recommending the HiLux.

“Its capability, towing over 3 tonne through some of the most difficult tracks Australia has to offer was pretty incredible. From soft sand towing on Fraser Island, to the mud flats of Cape York and steep rocky terrain of the Old Coach Road in far north Queensland, it was put through some extreme conditions which showcased its offload durability.”

Along with filming on the road, Glen has a passion for photography. For the Milky Way shot above, Glen headed out to the clear night skies of the countryside with family for some four-wheel driving and camping. As the day drew to a close he thoughts turned to snapping some night sky photos.

“I’ve always wanted to capture an ‘OH WHAT A FEELING’ jump shot at night with the Milky Way behind.”

Glen continued, “My thoughts were to have my nephew Mitch jump in front of the camp setting. And when he hit the highest point of the jump, I’d remote trigger the camera with a short diffused flash. Then when he landed I’d quickly get out of shot to allow the camera a further 25 seconds, with the lens open to absorb the low-lit HiLux. Fortunately, all the stars aligned for the shot!”

Glen’s second ‘OH WHAT A FEELING’ photo was taken during a trip to Mt Hotham in his RAV4.

“If there’s ever a road trip that reinvigorates the senses, it has to be the climb up to the Australian snowfields with the winding bends and unrivalled views. Leaving the city stresses behind, we made the climb and soon saw the outside temperature drop to zero. Then the dash displayed a notification of possible icy conditions outside. A quick press of the RAV4’s snow mode button had it all set up for the new terrain.”

He continued,

“We couldn’t resist pulling up near the top of the mountain to take in the views. That’s where I took a quick ‘OH WHAT A FEELING’ jump with my nephew to celebrate. But I must say, getting back into the car certainly gave us a new appreciation for the heated seats!”
