Environmental Management

Toyota Australia's environmental management system enables the company to monitor environmental performance, implement action plans and ensure targets are met.

Toyota Australia's Environmental Management System (TEMS)

TEMS is used to manage the company's environmental risks, ensure legal compliance and promote continuous improvement. Toyota Australia's goal at both production and non-production sites is to have TEMS certified to the international environmental management standard ISO14001. The manufacturing plant has been certified to ISO14001 since 1998. Dedicated on-site TEMS teams maintain compliance with the international standard through annual audits and promote environmental awareness and improvements.

Many of the initiatives that have significantly reduced energy use, water consumption, and improved recycling rates at the plant have been developed and managed by employees.

The company received the award for TEMS, which is now over 11 years old and was recognised as an exceptional environmental management system which exceeds nationally certified standards and provides an effective framework for continuous improvement.

SAI Global (Standards Australia International) is the largest certification and business risk management company in Australia.

Other finalists for the award represented a range of industries including plastics manufacturing, steel processing and electricity network companies. The award recognises Toyota Australia as a leader in environmental management, not only within the vehicle industry but in Australian business as a whole.

Environmental Licence

Toyota Australia's manufacturing operations are subject to Environment Protection Authority (EPA) licensing requirements. The company has held an accredited EPA licence since 2004 and has policies and procedures in place to continuously monitor compliance with these licensing requirements.

Based on Toyota Australia's classification of environmental risks there were three significant incidents in 2010/11. In each case the authorities were notified in accordance with the company's licence agreements. All cases were resolved without enforcement action from the EPA.
