Toyota Australia Produces 1.5-Millionth Locally-Built Camry
Toyota Australia marked the arrival of the 1.5-millionth Australian-built Camry in 2011. Built in Australia since 1987, the locally-produced Camry has made its mark on both export and domestic markets.
Camry is Australia's leading automotive export earner and for the past 16 years has been Australia's best-selling mid-size car. Total exports are now close to 800,000.
Production of four-cylinder petrol Camry models expanded in 2010 with the Camry Hybrid - the first locally built petrol-electric hybrid car in Australia.
Toyota Australia President and CEO, Max Yasuda, said Australia was one of only eight countries in the world building Camry. "This production milestone has been made possible by the foresight and commitment of Toyota and its people, here and in Japan," Mr Yasuda said.
Camry is one of the world's most successful cars with cumulative global sales exceeding 12 million. When local production of four-cylinder Camry began in 1987, Australia was the first country outside Japan to build the car. The current car is the sixth-generation Camry.
