Hilux number one in Queensland
Toyota has maintained its leadership of the Queensland motor vehicle market thanks to the remarkable popularity of the Toyota HiLux.
The Toyota HiLux - available in both 4x4 and 4x2 variants - topped the charts with sales of 6228 for the year to June 2007 - 833 more than the next best selling vehicle.
According to vehicle registration figures compiled by industry statistician VFACTS, Toyota sold 28,098 vehicles in the first half of 2007 - 12,834 more than its nearest rival.
Toyota's sales were up 16.7 per cent, compared with a decrease of -4.2 per cent experienced by its major rival.
Sales of HiLux in Queensland were up 23 per cent compared with the same period in 2006.
"Queensland has been a very strong state for Toyota for quite some time now, and the people of Queensland have established a special connection with the brand across many different Toyota models," said David Buttner, Toyota's senior executive director sales and marketing.
"However, the exceptional popularity of the Toyota HiLux has made it the number one selling vehicle of any type in Queensland, which is quite extraordinary."
In addition to the runaway success of the HiLux, Toyota's position of leadership in Queensland was boosted by strong performances by Yaris (up 12.0 per cent), Tarago (43.5 per cent) and Prado (10.5 per cent).
The hybrid-powered Toyota Prius experienced the greatest growth in Toyota's line-up, achieving sales of 298 for the six months to June 2007 - an increase of 131.0 per cent compared with the same period in 2006.
Toyota's strong first-half growth was assisted by strong sales of Toyota Aurion and Camry.
Aurion contributed 2529 sales to Toyota's Queensland total, while 3006 Camrys were delivered.
Nationally, Toyota's tally of 24,539 sales in June and 225,751 for the financial year are the best results ever achieved by an automotive company in Australia.
Toyota's sector-leading performance was the biggest single contributor to the record 1,003,882 vehicles sold in Australia during the financial year ended June 30.
It is the first time the Australian industry has sold one million vehicles in a 12-month period.
