Before leaving the mainland here are some helpful hints and a checklist. Make sure your list includes the following.
1. Fishing Tackle and equipment - This includes bait. There are limited locations on the island where bait & tackle can be purchased. Sandworms and pippies can be found on the beaches. Be mindful that there is a bag limit of 50 pippies per person. It is requested that you take only what you need and remember, fresh is best.
2. Food and drinking water supplies - Remember to bring secure containers so that your food is secured when you are not at the campsite to prevent dingoes and other wildlife from raiding your supplies. QPW rangers will enforce this and fines can occur.
3. Rubbish - Bring secure rubbish bins with locking lids for both general rubbish and recyclable items. You are requested to take off whatever you bring on to the island.
4. Phones - There are limited public phones on the island and mobiles have limited reception (Telstra only). On the northern
part of the island you will find public phones at the Orchid.
Beach Trading Post, Eliza Ave, and Waddy Point top campground.
5. Showers - Waddy Point and Dundubara campgrounds have facilities for hot and cold showers, they are coin operated ($1 coins required). If you are not camping in those areas please remember to bring your own shower system.
Do not bathe in lakes or creeks using soap.
6. Fires & Firewood - Open campfires are not permitted on Fraser Island except in the communal fire rings provided by QPW at Dundubara and Waddy Point (top and beachfront) campgrounds. Never leave a fire unattended, stay with your children and extinguish the fire before leaving the area, using water not sand. During times of high fire danger, fires may not be permitted, even in the provided fire rings. Firewood is not provided. Collecting bush wood (even twigs) from the national park is illegal. Some communal fire rings are provided, but you must bring firewood. Only bring milled timber off-cuts, not bush timber. It helps to reduce risk of introducing pests and plant diseases to the island.
7. Snatchem (recovery strap) - Ensure the last things placed in your vehicle for easy access are your snatchem, shovel, high lift jack and some blocks of wood (for jack plate) in case of the unforeseen, or in case you are called on to assist someone else. In case you have had to deflate your tyres to negotiate soft sand, it is recommended you carry a 12 volt Air Compressor. Note, the recovering of vehicles can be a dangerous activity. Please ensure everyone is standing well clear of all vehicles when any recovery is attempted.
8. General - First aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellent, torches and spare batteries.
9. YOUR EXPO IDENTIFICATION
The ID is used as follows:
(a) Showing security when entering the Expo site at night for the draws, which start around 6pm Saturday to Thursday, and 4.30pm on Friday night.
(b) Showing Fish Judges when weighing in fish caught.
(c) Proof of identity when your number is called out on stage for a prize. You must present your ID within 60 seconds to be eligible to win the prize.
10. Medical / First-aid Information
There is no pharmacy or resident doctor on the island. Bring adequate supplies of any prescription drugs you need and a well-equipped first-aid kit. It's always wise to have at least one person with a current first-aid certificate in your group. For the duration of the Expo, a Doctor and St Johns Ambulance are in attendance at the event. If you or other competitors experience any injuries or serious illness, please come to the Expo Site Office to arrange treatment with St Johns or the doctor.
11. Rubbish disposal
QPW waste transfer stations are provided at the following locations:
To help reduce litter and look after this World Heritage Area and Marine Park:
Leave no hazardous waste. Chemicals, batteries, used oil, fuel drums, paints, tyres, and materials containing asbestos are not accepted at the bins. Take these materials off the island and dispose of them properly. Penalties apply for illegal dumping.
