How Hybrids Work

Hybrid engines work by combining power from more than one source. In Camry Hybrids the power source is a 2.5 Litre petrol engine and an advanced battery-powered electric motor. This combination delivers powerful performance along with high fuel efficiency while minimising CO2 emissions[G1].

The Hybrid Engine combines a 2.5 Litre petrol engine with an advanced electric motor. Using Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive® technology, the two power sources work in parallel and can drive the car independently or together. This 'fully hybrid' system enables truly dynamic performance while at the same time delivering high fuel efficiency and exceptionally low CO2 emissions[G1].

Hybrid Battery

A key part of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive® system is the advanced battery technology. The battery in Camry Hybrid is a high power output, nickel-metal-hydride (Ni-MH) battery. It is designed to require little maintenance and has an 8 year warranty[W1]. The warranty is comprised of the 3 year Toyota New Vehicle Warranty and an additional 5 year Toyota Australia Hybrid Battery warranty.

Hybrid Synergy Drive®

Toyota's world leading Hybrid Synergy Drive® (HSD) technology is an advanced Hybrid System which teams a petrol engine with an advanced electric motor. The system intelligently manages the input from each power source depending on the driving situation, to provide the optimum balance of performance and fuel economy. The result is that Camry Hybrid delivers truly dynamic performance while achieving low fuel consumption of 5.2L/100km[G1] and reducing CO2 emissions to 121g/km[G1] .
