These days you'll see several vehicles claiming to be "hybrid", but often they fall short of genuine power sharing - with the electric motor only adding extra power from time to time, without ever taking over from the petrol engine.
Hybrid Camry, like Toyota's other hybrid cars, is built on a full hybrid system that switches between the electric motor and the engine, or runs off the combination of both. It intelligently manages the energy flows from the two different power sources to optimise the driving experience.
Uniquely, at low speeds, the car can be powered by the electric motor alone - using no petrol and producing zero emissions#.
But when you need more power for acceleration, Hybrid Camry can produce V6-like performance. The petrol engine combines with the electric motor, giving you a combined output of 140kW, which is more than sufficient for overtaking or highway driving.
Thanks to start-stop technology, the petrol engine can turn off when you stop at the lights and regenerative braking captures energy in the hybrid battery when you brake or slow down. This energy, which would normally be wasted, is stored for later use and emission-free# electric driving.
