Not all hybrid engines are the same. Many competitive technologies claim to offer complete power coordination, but only Toyota's full hybrid system can switch between the electric motor and the petrol engine seamlessly, or run off the combined power of both.

At low speeds, the hybrid system can be powered by the electric motor alone - using no petrol and producing zero emissions#. When more power is required, for when you're overtaking or climbing a hill, the petrol engine and electric motor combine to provide seamless power.

Compare this to a mild hybrid, which are primarily powered by a petrol engine with assistance from an electric motor. Without full power sharing mild hybrids can't hope to achieve the fuel savings made possible by a full hybrid. They're efficient during highway driving, but are compromised when it comes to stop-and-go city driving.
