The 86 is the latest in a long line of exciting track-bred Toyota sports cars that began with the rear-wheel drive Sports 800, continued with the 2000GT and in the 1980s saw the introduction of the AE86 - still a favourite with track racers all over the world.
The 86 was born and tuned on the track. Tweaking every aspect of handling at Nürburgring in Germany, honing the vital elements of acceleration, braking and cornering. Further fine-tuning occured at Fuji International Speedway, Suzuka Circuit and the Shibetsu Proving Ground in Japan.
For balance and handling, all of the heavier parts of the 86 are positioned as low down and close to the middle of the car as possible, enabling a very low centre of gravity.
In a world first, the 86 features a horizontally-opposed engine combined with Toyota's D-4S direct injection system. The flat shape of the 16-valve DOHC 2.0L engine means it sits low and towards the midship of the car helping with weight distribution.
The lightweight body and powerful 2.0L engine optimises power-to-weight, which combined with the car's ultra-low centre of gravity, gives the 86 incredible agility.
The 86 employs a new approach to aerodynamics. Instead of just holding the car on the road with down-force, the airflow above, below and to the sides is utilised to stabilise the 86, resulting in agile handling.
With a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout and a six-speed gearbox, the 86 puts you in touch with the true driving experience. The 86 is available with a
6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission.
The 86's 53:47 front-to-back weight distribution (when stationary) and low centre of gravity combine with rear-wheel drive to give the car great agility and responsive handling. On the race track, this set-up enables drivers to pick and hold the ideal racing line.
